Work/case study/Sweet Grown Alabama

AgricultureSweet Grown Alabama.

// agriculture

A statewide database connecting Alabama farms with the families who eat from them.

Sweet Grown Alabama had a mission that should have been simple: make it easy for Alabama families to find food grown in Alabama, and make it easy for Alabama farmers to reach those families. The implementation was anything but. A directory that handles every farmer, every product, every ZIP code in the state takes more than a CMS plugin. It takes a real database.

Searchable database build

What we built

A searchable, location-aware directory of every Sweet Grown Alabama member — farmers, restaurants, retailers, markets — keyed to ZIP code and product. The Find Sweet Grown feature lets a customer in Mobile or Huntsville or Talladega type in a ZIP or pick a product (peaches, peanuts, sweet potatoes, beef) and instantly see who has it nearby.

Features that made it useful

An Alabama Harvest Calendar showing what’s in season when. Educational materials for the program. Farmer spotlights. Recipes that connect specific products to actual meals. Every page exists to do the same thing: pull the producer and the eater closer together.

Self-service, by design

Farmers, restaurants, markets, and stores who want to be listed apply directly through the site — no phone tag, no PDF form, no “we’ll get back to you.” The Sweet Grown team can review applications, manage members, and update content without calling us. Built right, built once.

Building a complex database was a daunting task, but once I began working with The Nine I had complete confidence that our searchable website database would be built both timely and with the highest regard to quality. The team made every dream request for our website come true.

After making edits and building pages on our new site with Caboose, I can confidently say it is easy-to-learn, high-quality and user-friendly.
